Is this the rebadged Corvair?

Nope, but it shares parts with the Corvair. The main thing was it used the corvair transaxle, which allowed the use of a very thin, flexible drive shaft that curved under the floor, so there didn’t have to be a transmission tunnel (and no hump in the firewall either, since the trans was in the rear).

Huh, today I learned about the rope drive AND a cut-in-half-V8 inline 4 engine.
Seriously, this is pragmatism at its best and a hot mess of a hackjob, I love it :)

They spent some money doing the car rear and front engine ... back when they experimented. Sure, they killed a few people, but ... progress! And I recall seeing new ‘69 Corvairs and thinking ... COOL!

One of my friends had one of these. It was also a convertible and it had the weird sounding 4-cylinder engine. At that point I had no idea that it had very interesting driveline.

I learned somewhat recently that my Grandad bought my Grandma a Corvair in the 60s. She spun it at the end of the road they lived on at the time. While she came out unscathed, I believe it was the last Chevrolet my Granddad bought; he was firmly a Ford guy.
